Essity and the Global Philadelphia Association Reveal New Mural in Honor of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

Essity, the Global Philadelphia Association and Drexel University debut the artwork of Philadelphia-based artist Calo Rosa at Drexel’s Disque Hall, on World Environment Day, June 5.

Members of the Essity North America team in Philadelphia gathered at Drexel University’s Disque Hall on World Environment Day to unveil a commissioned public arts mural from the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA), in honor of UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action. The team also presented the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education with a grant.

As the region’s leader in promoting and enhancing international climate activity, GPA has plans to install 17 murals across Philadelphia to represent the 17 SDGs. These murals will be moved to a central location in 2026 to honor the United States’ semiquincentennial.

The 17 SDGs are a call to action put forth by the United Nations, encouraging all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. Essity has prioritized six of these goals for its business to make the greatest contribution possible—one of which is SDG 13: Climate Action.

Essity hand-selected the mural artist, Calo Rosa, and the grant recipient, The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, both of whom reflect Essity’s sustainability values. Calo Rosa is a Philadelphia-based artist born in San Salvador, who defined his own street style. It portrays the vibrant Latin American culture and mirrors the sounds, roots and forms of the urban-tropical style. Founded in 1965, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education is one of the first urban environmental education centers in the country, with 365 acres of fields, forests, ponds and streams. Essity proudly presented a $3,000 grant to the Schuylkill Center’s Executive Director, Erin Mooney.

“Essity has taken many actionable steps to make climate action a key part of our business, including our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our work toward net zero by 2050,” said Amy Bellcourt, vice president communications at Essity. “By highlighting climate action with the stunning art of Calo Rosa and alongside our friends at Global Philadelphia, Drexel University and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, we are calling upon everyone who walks by this mural to take a moment to reflect and act. After all, at Essity, we break barriers to well-being by taking care of each other by taking care of our planet.”

Essity has a long and proud history of supporting sustainable initiatives throughout Philadelphia, from corporate partnerships to giving back to the community.
